This policy covers edie, a personal WhatsApp-based household assistant built and operated by Kathryn Clifton (trading as "edie") for a small, personally-known group of families. edie is not a public product and is not open for general sign-up. Kathryn Clifton is the data controller for the personal data described below.
edie reads and sends WhatsApp messages for the families using it, via Vonage's messaging platform, in order to capture tasks/events, answer questions, and send daily briefings.
With a family's explicit permission (given by signing in via "connect google" over WhatsApp), edie reads and writes that family's own Google Calendar and Google Tasks — only to reflect events and tasks the family has asked it to track, and to check what's coming up for their briefing. Some families instead connect their own Apple Calendar and Apple Reminders, using an app-specific Apple ID password they provide directly, used the same way.
Families can optionally forward school emails/newsletters into a single shared inbox Kathryn operates, which edie scans for actionable dates and permission slips on that family's behalf. Other mail in that inbox is not read on a family's behalf.
Message content a family sends or forwards to edie may be passed to Anthropic's Claude API to interpret what's being asked (for example, to extract a task, a date, or a person's name) and to draft the text of a briefing. This is processed under Anthropic's own API terms and is not used to train any model or shared onward for any other purpose.
Family configuration, captured tasks/reminders, and calendar/task references are stored in a private database that only Kathryn, as the app's operator, can access. Any password edie holds directly (an Apple app-specific password, for families on that model) is encrypted at rest, never stored in plain text. Google/Apple credentials obtained via sign-in are stored per family, used only to act on that family's own calendar/tasks, and can be revoked at any time — via Google's own account permissions page, or by asking Kathryn to remove an Apple connection.
Data is not sold, and is not shared with anyone beyond the small number of service providers necessary to run edie itself: Google (Calendar/Tasks APIs), Vonage (messaging), Anthropic (interpreting messages and drafting briefing text), and Railway (hosting the app and its database).
Data is kept for as long as a family actively uses edie. Any family can ask Kathryn directly to disconnect a calendar/task connection, or to delete their data entirely.
